Hurricane Titration Kit

Safety

  1. Read and understand the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet for the Aqueous Cleaner you are using.
  2. Safety goggles and rubber gloves should be worn while executing titration test.

    Directions for Use

    1. Using a clean plastic container (not provided), take about 250ml cleaning solution from a well-agitated wash tank.
    2. Using the 10-cc graduated syringe, transfer exactly 10cc cleaning solution to the 125-ml graduated glass flask.
    3. Add deionized water to the 50 ml mark on the glass flask. Swirl to mix.
    4. Add 5 drops of methyl orange indicator to the glass flask. Swirl to mix. The solution should turn orange. If an orange color does not appear then there is no significant amount of cleaner.
    5. Fill one of the 5-cc disposable syringes, to 5cc with 0.1 N Hydrochloric Acid (HCI). Slowly add the HCI to the glass flask in small increments (between 0.2 and 1.0cc). Swirl to mix after each increment. NOTE Small increments will give greater test accuracy.
    6. Continue adding HCI increments until a red-pink color appears. If a pH meter is used add HCI until an endpoint of 4.0 is reached. NOTE: Depending upon which cleaning product is used, more than one syringe full of HCI may be required. See appropriate product graph for guidance.
    7. Record the total volume of HCI (1cc = 1ml) used to produce red-pink color.
    8. Using the Alkalinity Calibration Curves brochure included in this kit, find the appropriate product graph. Using the calibration curve determine volume percent cleaner (horizontal axis) by plotting total volume of HCI used (vertical axis) on the calibration curve.
    9. Add cleaner as appropriate to raise concentration of the wash tank to the desired level.
    10. Properly dispose of the 5-cc syringe, excess 0.1N HCI, and test solution. Rinse glass flask and return to test kit.
